GLASSHOUSE is an artist-run platform for hybrid performances refracted through the prism of virtuality.

GLASSHOUSE invites artists from a variety of backgrounds to produce immersive and interactive performative experiences for onscreen, offscreen and hybrid contexts, beyond the institutional confines of the white cube and the black box.

Taking the entanglement of our lives with digital technologies as its point of departure, GLASSHOUSE explores the digital possibilities of producing, presenting and disseminating performance works beyond the streaming paradigm. It operates as a laboratory for artists to exchange, experiment and express themselves through the interface of the vitreous screen.

GLASSHOUSE was founded as Next Waves Theater which was part of the series “Armen Avanessian & Enemies” at Volksbühne Berlin from September 2020 until July 2021. The archive of NEXT WAVES THEATER, which commissioned 25 performance works using apps and virtual platforms as an integral component, is now hosted on the GLASSHOUSE website.

The upcoming GLASSHOUSE program features commissioned works by The Agency; Selin Davasse and Zoë Claire Miller; a collaboration between FRZNTE (Franziska Zahl), Ivan Cheng, Anna Papathanasiou, Tilman Hecker and Scott Bolman; as well as by Onyeka Igwe; and Susanne Sachsse.

In addition to offscreen events in Berlin and Munich, a new onscreen work will premiere every second Wednesday at 8PM from 1 December 2021 until 26 January 2022.
